Rob West
Soprano
Robert West embarked on his musical journey at the tender age of nine as a member of The San Francisco Boys Chorus, an esteemed organization established by Madi Bacon in 1948. The chorus was created at the request of the San Francisco Opera, which sought to recruit and train young boys for performances in renowned operas like Carmen and La Boheme. At that time, it was the only boys’ opera repertory chorus in the nation, and its productions garnered significant acclaim and success.
From 1980 to 1985, West’s involvement with the San Francisco Boys Chorus afforded him numerous opportunities to collaborate with prestigious institutions such as the San Francisco Opera, the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and the San Francisco Ballet Company. He had the privilege of being conducted by some of the most celebrated maestros of the era, including Edo de Waart, Vance George, Yehudi Menuhin, Allan Lannom, and Michael Tilson Thomas. Following his high school graduation, he pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education at the University of the Pacific, later advancing his vocal studies at the Boston Conservatory and earning a Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of New Mexico. His vocal training included private lessons with notable instructors like Bradley Ellingboe, Lorraine Manz, Steven Rickards, and Marilyn Tyler. A member of the professional music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, West was on a promising path to an opera career, even preparing for an internship audition with the Santa Fe Opera. However, as he approached this milestone, he discovered a profound passion for working with children, leading him to dedicate the past 29 years to choral conducting within public education. Alongside his teaching, he has remained active in the performance scene, collaborating with regional companies such as The Gilbert and Sullivan Society in Seattle, which also performs in London, the Renton Civic Theater, Super Summer Theater in Las Vegas, and Opera Las Vegas. In the spring of 2005, he was appointed as the choral educator at Clark High School.
Since Mr. West’s appointment, he has been recognized as a quarterfinalist for the GRAMMY Music Educator Award on six separate occasions. Additionally, he was nominated four times for the Heart of Education Award, ultimately winning this esteemed accolade in 2023. Mr. West also achieved National Board Certification in 2020, a credential he will hold until 2030.
